With pollution, the wind, the sun, product build-up, and heated tools, your hair goes through some pretty rough treatment. So, it’s no wonder that many people often find themselves having to deal with the problem of damaged hair. If you do find that your hair has become dry, split ends have developed, and your hair has lost all its shine, don’t worry, because we have ten tips that will help you repair your damaged hair and bring it back to life.

1. Use the blow-dryer less frequently

Using the blow dryer less often will both prevent damaged hair and help to repair it. The best thing to do is let your hair dry in the air, but if you do use a blow-dryer, set it to the maximum air stream, but at a low heat setting. Any heated tool is likely to damage your hair, so the less you use them, the better the health of your hair will be.

2. Shampoo less frequently

Daily shampooing will strip out all the natural oils from your hair and that will make your hair dry and brittle. Switch to shampooing every other day, or once every three days, and that will give the natural oils a chance to heal your damaged hair. If you your hair gets a bit too oily, you can always use a dry shampoo between washes.

3. Use tea to bring back some shine

Rinsing tea through your hair will bring back some of the shine to damaged hair. Brew the tea in the usual way, let it cool, and then use it as a final rinse after you have shampooed. Tea can change the colour hair, though, so if you have light hair, use chamomile tea and, if you have dark hair, you can use black tea.

4. Be especially careful with damaged hair when it is wet

Even healthy hair is more prone to damage when it’s wet, but damaged hair is even worse, so be very careful how you treat your hair when it is still damp. Don’t rub at wet hair with a towel to dry it, wrap your hair withe an old T-shirt (because its texture is more gentle on the hair), and leave it to dry naturally. You should also use a wide toothed comb to gently tease tangles out of wet hair. Don’t yank tangles out with a brush!

5. Put a humidifier in your bedroom

Central heating and air conditioning take a lot of the moisture out of the air and it could be that your damaged hair is being made worse by the dry air in your home. Try putting a humidifier in your bedroom when you go to bed and that will keep the air moist, which will help to stop your hair drying out overnight.

6. Hot oil treatment

One of the best home treatments for damaged hair is to use hot oil. The best oils to use are olive oil, coconut oil, sweet almond oil or macadamia oil. You simply warm up the oil, apply it to your hair and then cover your hair with a shower cap and leave the oil on for half an hour. If your hair is very badly damaged, try leaving the oil on overnight.

7. Let your hair down more often

Don’t wear your hair pulled back too tight and, if you do usually wear your hair in a ponytail, let your hair down on some days to give your hair a bit of a break. Having your hair pulled tight puts a strain in the hair follicles and wearing tight bands around your hair can cause breakage.

8. Try cold rinsing

Avoid washing your hair with very hot water, because that takes the moisture out of your hair. Also, a cold rinse after each shower or shampoo can put the shine back into damaged hair and it reduces the risk of breakage.

9. Use a deep conditioner once a week

If you use a deep conditioning treatment once a week, it can make a huge difference with damaged hair. Choose a conditioner that is designed for your hair type and then it won’t make your hair look greasy and it won’t weigh your hair down. A deep conditioning treatment can be especially beneficial if you have coloured your hair, because hair dyes can dry out your hair significantly.

10. Clarify damaged hair

After a while, hair products can build up your hair and that will make your hair look dull and it will prevent conditioners and other treatments being absorbed into your hair. Use a clarifying shampoo once a week and follow it up straight away with conditioner. That will clean the product residue off your hair and leave your hair looking much healthier.
